Mohican Hills President's Blog

This blog will be used for the President of Mohican Hills to describe his thinking on community management issues.  Right now there is only one topic  - how to best proceed with the Mohican Hills web site and listserv.  The blog operates in a similar manner to the Forums.  The Forum Gateway page describes how you can read, comment, or add topics to the Blog.

It would be beneficial if we could effectively use computer-based tools to improve communications within the community and to more efficiently perform some community functions.  The only tool we are using today is the Mohican Hills listserv. The listserv is extremely easy to use.  However, it cannot effectively perform some desirable functions, and many people have stopped reading its posts because either they  were not interested in their topic or did not like some of the conversations. Also, there is apparently a Mohican Hills Community Facebook page that could be used for community communications, but we cannot determine if it is in use.

Last fall we began to build a web site that could provide a more robust communication tool, but we stop work on it to publish the MH Directory.
We now have rebuilt the web site. While it does include a listserv capability (the News page), we are not planning to replace the current listserv.  We will nudge some people to post messages on the existing listserv and on the web site's equivalent listserv to see if they are comfortable with using the web site's listserv-like feature.  The upside of having a web-site based listserv is that then everyone would only have to access one information source.  However, it is recognized that many of our residents are not very computer literate, and may find the web site's listserv too difficult to use..

So our plan is to use the next three months to determine: 1) if there is community interest in continuing to use the web site; 2) whether we should use the Forum Gateway's General Posts Forum to replace the current Mohican Hills listserv; or 3) to continue to operate both the web site and the existing listserv. We will survey everyone after the three month period to decide how we should move forward.
